Orange ya Glad?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Every time I pick up some orange soda at the grocery store, I always think to myself “Orange ya glad”?

Silly I know.

Orange you glad I didn’t say banana again?

Why do I buy orange soda instead of the cola flavored drinks? I think they’re a little bit better for you. OK – all you health nuts – don’t beat me up over it! The ingredient list is rather short. I like that. It’s water, sugar with natural flavors (and some preservatives). I’m guessing the natural flavor is probably orange essential oil.

I like to keep orange soda in the fridge in the garage, ready for the kiddos or guests that stop by. They’re great to toss into a backpack or to keep in an ice chest in the car (think ball games etc….) It just always tastes fresh and good.

When checking out orange soda reviews, remember that there are several different kinds (brands). I try to always get Minute Maid. It’s an orange name… made by the coke folks…

It’s sweet, and orangey and hits the spot every time.

Tiny Trek

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

A couple of smart scientists from Japan have created the world’s tiniest Star Trek model.

They made a teeny tiny model of the USS Enterprise at one-billionth scale.

This ’ship’ is called “Nano Trek”. It’s SO tiny that you need an electron microscope to see it!

The model was constructed with a focused ion beam using phenanthrene gas, a process called “chemical vapor deposition.” The ship is 8.8 micometers in length.

Nothing quite like taking the world’s most advanced nanotechnology and using it to express classic sci-fi geekdom.

Trek Baldies

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Trekkers, trekkies, and the actors that play them are one great bunch of people. Charitable people too.

Case in point: Robert Picardo, Ethan Phillips, and John Billingsley have joined together with the Los Angeles Audubon Society to celebrate the Los Angeles Audubon’s 100th birthday. They are calling themselves the “Bald(ing) Eagles of Star Trek.

The Special Birdathon celebration will take place on May 9th.

WORF

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

WORF is not ‘just’ a Star Trek character. WORF is also the acronym for the Window Observational Research Facility, a science equipment rack flying on the space station Destiny.

Because ‘Worf’ was Klingon, the klingon language was chosen for the emblem. Don’t worry, the creator asked Star Trek first!

They ended up using the Klingon Klinshai, or Mandel, script that appeared in the USS Enterprise Officer’s Manual to spell out the name, W O R F.

The WORF patches also made it into the STS-131 Official FLight Kit and were handed out as souvenirs to the team members.

Klingon, a fictional language, has made it into space.

Kinda cool.
