Going Going, Gone

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Ever peruse the public auction sites? I like to look through them every now and then. I’m usually surprised by an item or two, but this is a first!

The Alpine School District in Lindon Utah has up on public surplus auction a Star Trek Shuttle Simulator.

http://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/all,ut/auction/view?auc=384131

The bidding sits right this minute at a even thousand but the reserve hasn’t been met. Wonder what they’ve set it at?

It’s a ‘pick up’ item, sold as is – where is.

Any ST clubs in Utah should be seriously considering bidding on this. It would make a great backdrop for photo ops, a fun prop for reenactments.

Hmmm, or a really FUN unexpected gift for a trekker….

Star Trek Finds

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I love Star Trek gadgets, and so does the man I buy ST items for…

Today I found some little wood dolls that look like original ST characters, Kirk and Spock (and others too!).

They’re just $12 and will make great stocking stuffers. You do still have stockings for the grown trekkies in your life, don’t you?

You can find them at http://www.fatcatstudio.com/.

No, Fat Cat Studios doesn’t know me – they aren’t paying me. I’m just sharing what I found!

Darn Fire

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Last night I missed Heroes AND The Big Bang Theory. There was an enormous apartment complex fire in Edmond (North of OKC) and it monopolized the news for ages. They preempted MY SHOWS!

What did I miss?

Well for one, Will Wheaton was a guest actor on the Big Bang Theory.

I missed it!

Shatner says “Take me back to Tulsa”

YES, Shatner will be attending the 2010 Trek Expo in Tulsa this coming June 25-27.

Visits from the original Star Trek series are getting harder to come by and Oklahoma is pleased to have gotten ‘the Captain” to visit.

Tickets are already on sale for the Tulsa event at TREKEXPO.NET

Disclaimer: StarTrekFinds has received no renumeration of any kind from TrekExpo.net. We’re just fans!

Computer: Earl Grey, hot

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Those smart fellas over at Langley have developed EBF3, an Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication, manufacturing technology, very similar to Star Trek technology.

What does it do?

It’s a fabrication process that starts with a drawing of the item you want. You push a button, and out comes the part!

This green process creates very little waste and is best used when you just need one, or a few of something. Much cheaper than a full blown manufacturing process.

Wonder how long it will be before we see a ‘home’ model?

NCC-1701

Imagine sitting at your computer, chatting on a connected web cam. Sure, you do it all the time right?

But do you do it with a Star Trek Enterprise shaped web cam?

I didn’t think so!

It’s out now! Just in time for the upcoming holiday season. Be sure to put one on your Christmas gift list!

It’s a traditional web camera that hooks up to your computer via a USB cord, and is flexible, and best of all, it’s just COOL!

Save the Whales

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Remember when Scotty shared the formula for transparent aluminum in Star Trek IV? It resulted in the clear compartments that ultimately saved the whales. Well, it looks like transparent aluminum is becoming a reality now!

A team of scientists from Oxford have created a transparent form of aluminum by seething the metal with the worlds most powerful soft x-ray laser. A pulse from the laser knocks out a core electron from every aluminum atom (in a test sample) without disrupting the structure. This resulted in an aluminum that is nearly invisible to extreme ultraviolet radiation.

Way to challenge time and space Scotty. How’d you do it?
